Another Successful Edition of the Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition Showcases Young Maltese Talent

The latest edition of the Bice Mizzi Vassallo (BMV) Music Competition, organised by the National Council of Women (NCW) Malta, was held on 18th October 2025, in Sala Isouard, Manoel Theatre, bringing together some of Malta’s most promising young musicians in an inspiring celebration of musical excellence.

The competition is organised by the BMV Music Organising Committee within the National Council of Women. This committee is composed of the Chairperson Dr Corinne Bowman Briffa, Tatjana Chircop, Rosette Fenech and Therese Cassola.

The competition featured two main categories: Category A – Young Budding Performers and Category B – Senior Section, with prizes awarded as follows:

Category A – Young Budding Performers

• 1st Prize: Luke Muscat

• Special Prize for Interpretation of Modern Music: Gabrijel Cordina

Category B – Senior Section

• 1st Prize (Strings): Kurt Falzon

• 1st Prize (Pianoforte): Kellyann Spiteri

Prize winners from the Senior Categories will receive a traineeship abroad with leading professionals in their field, including flights and accommodation. Winners from the Budding Performers Category will receive tickets for concerts at the Manoel Theatre and invitations to attend masterclasses conducted by established musicians.

The Alfred Mizzi Foundation was once again the main sponsor of this year’s competition, with additional support from the NSTF. The organisers expressed their gratitude to Adrian Mamo, Artistic Director of the Manoel Theatre, as well as to Dr. Karasek for his generous contribution.

The distinguished judging panel included Dr. Tatjana Chircop (Chair), Dr. Charlene Farrugia, Carmine Lauri, Dr. Max Erwin, Prof. Lorenzo Fiorito, and Maestro Michael Lessky.

The Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition, founded by the National Council of Women in honour of the late pianist Bice Mizzi Vassallo, continues to uphold its mission of nurturing Malta’s young musical talent and providing them with opportunities for professional growth and international exposure. Through this initiative, NCW seeks to promote artistic excellence, discipline, and cultural appreciation among Malta’s youth — values that remain central to the Council’s educational and cultural vision.
